Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
Posted this on HWZ; posting here also cos pretty desperate already: Rotator cuff injury since September - probably got a slight tear in my infraspinatus & supraspinatus... saw the ART fella but didnt work for me. lateral knee pain since Sept 2007. seen CGH sports medicine guys & physios, went thru' X-ray & MRI but detected nothing.... ART also didnt do much good either. Accupuncture only gave temporary relief....
Now I'm at a loss re what to do to get myself healed so that I can train properly again. any GOOD & EXPERIENCED rehab specialist to recommend ie those who r also into weight training & knowledgeable about mobility, flexibility, muscle imbalances, trigger points, scar tissues. postural issue etc etc??
$$ not an issue.... I just want to be rehabed & healed so that I can train properly again.

Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
Let me look at it, can't say i'm very experience but i've dealt with this stuff with my 71 year old client.
Weib wrote:Today I finally understood the word, patience. And with patience, sometimes a little improvement goes a long way and more beneficial than trying to give more than you should.
As a trainer, I swore to myself that i would give the best value for my service and never would i allow myself to me another run of the mill trainer that you get at a globogym.
I pride myself with great results with the shortest time possible, using the latest effective techniques which Physiotherapist/Strength coaches in the US and around the world are raving about. I hate numbers on the scale, fat percentage because i see myself as a realist and tangible results is what i'm after.
However with my success with other clients, i get carried away and try to achieve get the same results and sometimes its not really desirable results which end up with me more frustrated with myself.
Client G came came to me and ask me to work with me, he was in his 70s. I was stumped seriously, i had no clue where to start, what to do and how to get things done. It didn't make things any better with his condition; a messed up posture and age related atrophy catching up with him.
He had a back surgery done 30 years ago, his T5-9 was grafted from his shin and resulted in him having a hump back. He fell 4-5 years back, and tore his left rotator cuff which limited his ROM by about 4-5 inches off from the right.
Aren't you as stumped as me on how to help him?
So i sought some help from veteran coaches and PTs from the US and they gave me some valuable advice, they could only chime in here and there and i had to put together a program to help him.
For 2 weeks, i went by the book from what i learnt and what i thought i knew about training, applied the template that i was taught but it was an up hill struggle.
What made perfect body sense to me was alien language to him, so after a week break from training with him; he returning from a overseas trip, i decided to go slow and just focus my attention what really mattered and improved his life - tangible results!
So first i focus on fixing his shoulder and left rotator cuff, after looking around i decided to use Mike Boyle's Joint by Joint Mobilization techniques for his shoulders.
The results?
A picture speaks a thousand words.
With that fixed, i went on to focus on his gait. He was unsure of his step, shuffle his feat along the way and always looked down just to check where his feet went.
It was paramount importance to me as this was affecting his everyday life.
If you had grandparents, you can share my agony of their movement.
I tried to localize the problem, and found that his hip was extremely unstable and with that brought upon poor balance which is why he was unsure with his foot and looking down.
So i ran with me simple glute activation drills just to wake them up, then practice with him balancing on one foot. Sounds easy right? Not for a person who lost his ability to fire his glutes after sitting down for a tremendously long time..
I managed to coach him true what was holding him back and got him to re-educated his body to move properly. It took some work as i had to find lingo that he could understand.
The results is positive if not i would be ashame to even share as i failed in my job.
If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a video would mean a thesis?
Re - training Gait-
Optimizing his Gait with obstacles -
So the moral of the story? A little goes a long way and sometimes over adding value would mean trying too hard and frustrating yourself with no results.
Fix the things that holding you back first then move on to the more complex things.

Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
Ok - just spoke to Herman on the phone & fixed a tentative appt to see him after CNY.... keeping my fingers crossed that he'll be able to help me rehab so that I can train hard again.... eg doing dips between chairs & pull-ups with 15kg easily at 70 kg bodyweight...
I'll be hitting 52 this yr but to me age is just a no. if the lau ah ma's that i see on youtube are able to deadlift 100kg i should be able to hit my fitness goals easily ie with the RIGHT rehab program.

just as well cos after that i received an e-mail fr Calvin Chin's PT cum rehab specialist who seems pretty knowledgeable & experienced....
Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
Ok, just an interim update - met with the PT cum rehab therapist that Calvin fr HWZ recommended. He turned out to be an Opt trained guy - level 2. knows Ben, Herman & most of the Opt trained folks so probably fr one of the earlier batches. turned out that Peter also owes him money.... he's presently upgrading himself thru' other related courses that deals with myofascial release at a much greater detail as well as deep tissue massage.
Great thing is that his place is just a few streets away so getting him to help me rehab will be much easier in terms of not needing to travel much at all. Will be signing on a package with him....
i'll let everyone know how my rehab with him progresses...

Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
so far 2 sessions - 1st session: postural assessment followed by manual mysofascial release..... my left side is enitrely swrewed up cos of the fractures of my left toes that i sustained over 20yrs back so that's why it's my left rotator cuff & knee that's giving issues. the manual mysofascial release session was damn painful - i had trigger points all over the place from my face right down to my toes.... jialat like hell esp when it was done on the TMG. i was screaming every other minute.
just had 2nd session today - failed every movement screen test, that's how screwed up my body is. was taught how to do a lateral stretch on my left entire left side after the initial foam rolling, after that did a left lunge - and presto, 90% of the pain on my knee was gone, it was a good feeling. after that, had deep tissue massage done - also painful altho' not so xiong as the myofascial release one....
homework so far - SMR & thoracic spine extension work.....

Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
I went for my 1st visit to Aldrin today. Can't say much yet since only 1st visit, but he's very helpful, even called me afterwards to check up on me. And I didn't have change so he say just pay me next time. But he managed to find out a few of my faults from various assessment, though some of the stuff he ask me to do, I've never heard of before. PM/email/text me if chiu want contact.
P.S. His house super nice lah. Got his own home gym somemore, win liao.

Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
Sounds promising, can you PM me his contact too? I might go have my shoulder, wrists, elbows, knee looked at. I still can't bench heavy with full ROM, and my elbows are flaring u again, too much DL?
Re: Any good rehab specialist to recommend?
OK - update re my progress.... but before that I must say that I haven't seen Aldrin for the last 3 wks: i was down with a bad flu for about 1.5 weeks, after that Aldrin was (& still is) on course on weekends. I could only see him on Saturdays fr 2pm onwards, what with now seemingly ridiculous workloads being piled on me..... working almost 24 x 7 with conference calls at least 3 times a week... i suspect that was why i fell sick - too much work stress & not enough rest. Anyway back to my progress...
rotator cuff - no more pain at all now (even when I didnt do the rehab exercises during the flu)... now back to rehab work with emphasis on push-up plus etc. can do inverted rows now just like last time... now working slowly to regain lost strength, hopefully can start pull-ups in a month's time.
left knee - still lingering lateral pain (about 10%) but can do lunges now. this was impossible before.....
will be seeing him on Sat afternoons after his course next week so that he can continue the soft tissue work on my lumbar & at the same time help me fix my outta whack hip mechanics..

Turns out Aldrin also works at RP and he's the one who designed the RP Fitlion gym.
