My guess is just a dowel or empty bar.

we're probably thinking of something different when it comes to 'coaching back squat'

my problem with backsquat is that it seems that any moron (including me) can put 100kg on their back and kinda sorta do a super ugly squat. these moron start to think they can squat, and go up to 140 and start to develop problems.

if it's front squat, it's easier to tell when you're fucking up. if it's too heavy and you start to lean forward too much you'll just dump the weight.

Yes, mechanic first, then consistency , then intensity ( or load in this case)
You can cover the first 2 very well in 15 mins
Then self practice

Then re oach it
Then add load

Just because you pass your driving test you don't jump into an f1 car straight away even if you could afford it.

uh... ok, that driving comparison is a good one.

well, the way i see it, learning to squat an empty bar is like learning how to step on gas and brake.
some people step on it too hard, soft, but they'd eventually figure it out, if they take their time.

what i'm suggesting is that people need coaching, constantly, so they learn the optimal timing to step on the brake at the corner, engage clutch, etc.
you actually need someone sitting next to you and telling you what to do and letting you know where you're messing up.
(which boyle says he can't be doign with 20 people at once, and I totally agree with that point)

you tried to learn that without coaching, then you'll go through a lot of tires, etc.
but with back squat, you'll probably be walking around with a bad back, hip, etc, and you can't really buy these things like you buy tires.

if casual lifters are just squatting 60kg-100kg, then they might as well front squat.
i figure it's more like driving an automatic with abs and what not, which gives you a less chance of fucking up.

and... there really isn't a casual lifters 'driving a f1' at a rack.

Some people lift a lot better with people looking at them than without...

You have to get the mechanics right at the start

If someone has been squaring for a while and the mechanics are wrong , then you take them back to driving school

Have them air squat ( zero load), they must get this right before they progress onto adding a load

You hve to feel what's going on inside your body without load

Most people make the mistake of trying to coach someone with load AND bad mechanics. This is like building a house on sand

Once you have a bunch of guys who have the correct mechanics with air squats, then it's a lot easier to coach a group of people.

No. Learn to front squat and learn to backsquat

One without the other is like buying a car and being afraid to drive at night

i'm not saying to drop the back squat completely. just that it seems more logical to be using the front squat for training if i'm lifting in small numbers

As our dear friend Peter used to say, "I can teach anyone to squat." Looks like he's better than Boyle then :)

Totally agree, once you have learnt how to squat correctly, it doeasn't matter how heavy or how intense (high rep air squats) you squat. Same principle can be applied to alot of other movements including POSE running.....etc
1. Mechanics (learn the movement)
2. Consistency (display efficiency and efficacy consistantly. Doing the common uncommonly well = virtuosity)
3. Intensity (increase load/reps)
Constant Variant, Functional Movements executed at high intensity eliciting in an increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains........
The sceince is in the Programme, the magic is in the Movements

teaching is easy, getting them to execute it is a nightmare.
Working "hard," or the perception of working hard, doesn't really mean anything. Sweating, vomiting, and breathing hard could be a good workout or a tropical disease kicking in.-Dan John

depends on the lesson plan, the coaches knowledge of the correct cues, their 'eye' for movement and how 'bad' the student is

in general anyone with some conditioning with over 6 months in the gym without coaching, is going to be much harder than taking someone who is untrained with zero physical conditioning

your a classic example, the reason your clean is so screwed up, is because you were never taught how to dead-lift properly

some people just can't squat to save their life actually.
Tried box squats/air squats...can only get just to break parallel, before they lose balance..maybe it go to do with height + poor ankle mobility.

I just use the split squat, same effect easier to teach and for them to learn, plus i can get them to go deeper down.

Should have used it earlier, oh well.. evolving process.

if they cannot air squat then they cannot sit on the toilet, nor get up from the chair

you have to master the air squat first

sitting on the toilet and suspending your arse in mid air is two different things.

if you think this, then this explains why you cannot teach them how to do it

next time your setting up to sit down on a sit down toilet, have a look down at where your feet are and where your ass needs to go to....

heres a big hint, its not straight down

if you cannot lower yourself down to the toilet seat without collapsing in a heap, then you have much bigger problems than learning how to squat

squatting down onto the seat is no different than squating down onto a med ball, its just the height that varies, the basic motion is the same

you really need to pull your head out of your ass and go and get some quality coaching, then you may understand all this rather than regurgitate stuff you pick up on the internet

heck, even ask kevin to teach you

i'm sure he will do it for free

its not about who rules

it about basic mechanics for daily life

you need to understand the basics AND master the fundamentals before you start talking about split squats or romanian fanny hammers

its very clear that you do not

Come to think about it why do toilet bowls nowadays change to the seating style instead of the former squat style ones? The seating style one seem to decrease our hip mobility.

How often do we squat in everyday lives other than training of course. Why are the seated toilet bowls even invented.. We should promote the use of the squating toilets man. Fuck the "no squating on toilet seats"! Promote hip mobility!! Say say sayy fwwoooaahhh!!
Squats can only strengthen, tear or break something. Strengthening, tearing and breaking is totally awesome. Thus squats are awesome.

what makes you think this is about crossfit?

try westside you idiot

you go with whoever can demonstrate results

the fact that you think this
"sitting on the toilet and suspending your arse in mid air is two different things."

is merely demonstrating your complete lack of understanding

rather than take cheap shots at CF, why don't you explain to us why they are different?
