research on methods to prevent brain trauma

Post by Ryan.carpediem »

Didn't know where I should have posted this.

There was an article last thur in Mind Your Body on the insidious and frightening effects of brain trauma. I don't have the exact article as I don't subscribe to online Straits Times, but from what i can recall there a few noteworthy points
: brain trauma can be accumulative (symptoms manifested only aft a long period of time)
can be caused by INDIRECT impacts ( tackling in rugby/ braking in a car/ )
effects can just suddenly worsen greatly eg. someone can feel dizzy and then fall into a coma the next day

Is there any research done on how we can alleviate its symptoms/minimize chances of this happening? I don't think ppl would avoid playing contact sports (rugby/boxing) and braking is quite inevitable.

Wondering if neck strength training can help to minimize the trauma caused by impacts.
read on ross enamait's blog tt apparently, having a strong neck (and traps according to alex) helps the head to absorb force/impact more for a punch (let's say to the jaw)

brain trauma occurs because your brain gets smashed against the walls of your skull upon impact. there is little you can do about that.

If you get a concussion from braking, you've got bigger things to worry about...
