Who here believes in personal time? Being in solitude, socially isolated for a short period of time to reflect on stuff. No family members, friends or even gf/bf/spouse present.
I find that it helps to clear the mind.

Once in a long while I have an afternoon or day off by myself. It can help to refresh the mind, but it depends on the type of person you are.

Isn't gym work already personal time? Work? Study? Public transport? You need to learn how to focus, tune out the outside world, if you feel that you actually need to go to a cave somewhere and sit down for 10 years.
But to a certain extent you are right, I think nowadays there's way too much emphasis on filling every available time slot with something, whether listening to music through your headphones, watching TV whilst in the gym, staring at the hot girl in class...

Agree with that. I dunno whether it's only in Singapore, but time seems so tight that SOMETHING has to be accomplished with whatever little time we have.. Pick nose la, eat on train/bus la, get stomped la..

I do. I believe it is necessary to a significant percentage of time alone. I've noticed that there's a common characteristic among strong/self-sufficient people: these great people who train hardcore like Ben, Jen, KC, keith, Goi Sufian Jon Wong are probably not afraid of being alone and spending time alone.
Besides, it bears mention that generally, the older we get, the less time we'll spend with our friends/relatives/colleagues and the more time we'll spend alone(or with our wife and kids at best) and the less time we'll have to spend with our friends; so why not get conditioned to it now.

Nothing wrong with being alone.
Don't need to feel awkward about being alone.
Be comfortable with yourself.

I came across this theory a long time ago about how we're essentially a battery, and that everything we do contributes a current (or is it a charge?)to it. The more we do, the greater the amount of current. Too much can cause the battery to blow. Therefore, spending some tranquality time by yourself, a.k.a decharging yourself, helps in maintaining some balance.

hmm, i like to shop alone, go to library alone, watch tv alone, read alone, study alone, workout alone (sometimes), eat alone (but not really in public places).
i dun really believe that i have to be occupied with something exciting all the time in order to make life meaningful and happening. I like to stay indoors (or chilling with people I feel comfortable with) unless there is a need/reason/desire/want to go out. Yes, old granny here is a "bore" but I could not care less about other people's comments about how I have to be more happening (for my age). I'm myself and I'm ok with it. I think the peer pressure for youngsters now is fitting in and go with the trend (clubbing, drinking etc). Once in a while, it's ok maybe. Imo, people whom I find "appealing" are those who are comfortable and confident of themselves and not trying too hard to be "trendy" and "popular" in order to fit in the modern "youngster society". Maybe as one grows older, (or mature) it will become a norm... to me at least.
And i agree with Ryan on this:
"Besides, it bears mention that generally, the older we get, the less time we'll spend with our friends/relatives/colleagues and the more time we'll spend alone(or with our wife and kids at best) and the less time we'll have to spend with our friends; so why not get conditioned to it now." -->due to work (real work) and other important stuff, you wun have the energy to spend time with friends/relatives/colleagues. Unless they are a pretty close bunch, one could make exceptions.

This is bordering on ludicrous. As you get older, you'll lose your teeth, so why not get conditioned to it now?
There are different phases in life for everything, most of you folks are too young to appreciate this, including myself, since I'm just about to start the traditionally downhill part of one's life.
Back to the original subject, my point is, alone time is contingent upon yourself... learn to focus whilst surrounded by a million screaming seagulls.
As you get older, you may be surprised, you spend more time everyday surrounded by people, not the opposite, who are constantly clamouring for attention. Meanwhile, the 20+ projects with a deadline looming in the next 3-4 months (set by yourself) are rapidly coming to a close...
What do you do? What, pray tell, do you do? Coz' you better not give up... there's no such option (set by yourself).
This is a microcosm of my current situation... if you think studying was hard, you ain't seen 'nuthin yet.
[edit] I haven't even talked about personal life yet, and yes, I do have some semblance of a personal life[/edit]

Sometimes it is best not to think so much and do what you have to do
Ignorance can be a bliss at times
Look at me... somewhat poor but pretty much happy-go-lucky and ready to laugh it out anytime
Delve too much into these things I reckon I would have become a monk instead.

He who hath many friends, hath none.
if one feels the need to get away from it all, then maybe he has too many meaningless relationship.
i don't know when this 'perosnal time' idea came about... it seems like something everyone has always had...

No idea about you all, but my definition of personal time is either half a day or a day where you're all by yourself doing the shit you like, say, once every month or two.

Finally, Steph, someone on this forum who shares the same opinion with me and has bothered to acknowledge it instead of ignoring it when they think I"m right, and shooting me when they think I'm not. lol.
