OK, i've been around a bit and this guys name keeps popping up, some people swear by him, some people swear when his name in mentioned... what is the deal? does he have a PHD like he claims here:
http://www.afperformancecenter.com/coaches.html is it true that he shut down a gym a short notice leaving people short-changed?
http://www.crossfitla.com/cms/index.php/workouts/ there seems to be a lot of mixed feeling about this guy, would anyone recommend taking his courses? i'll be in LA for 6 months, so was thinking of doing it but it just seems a little weird that he says he has a PHD and masters and all that without listing the colleges he went to.... what's up with that? dun wanna waste my $$$ on fly-by-nighters lor!

In all honesty, what he does and knows is good.
He knows his shit and is able to teach if you're asking him questions.
But his ways of doing things without integrity is something that i do not agree with nor do i condone but disagree vs dislike is another matter.
I do not dislike him but i do not agree with his practices.
But with the money spent, i'll rather you take up other mentor ship courses - depending on what you want learn
Alwyn Cosgrove/Athlete performance/Gray Cook etc are far more valuable then what he teaches.
Even the PB summits to listen to people like mike boyle, stuart mcgill etc is worth the money.

hmmm... think i'd rather be with a person with integrity and honesty who doesn't know everything rather than a liar who does; does that sum it up? did he actually know alot, or just bluff alot? i've worked with ang mo coaches b4, the ones with real education you can tell after 3-4 sessions - very deep knowledge, the one who don't have education, but many years in industry, good but cannot always explain or argue, get defensive etc when you question, which one he?

He does, he is one person i've seen with all the latest educational DVDs/Books - leeched quite a fair bit from his collection.
But it depends on what you want to learn - there are many others in the US that are better imo.
BTW who are you?

I think you need a coach more than you need the knowledge to design your own program lol.
But i think

AP Mentorship is a better deal, nick winkeman's on Strengthcoachpodcast has alot of good insights with the methology towards training program.
Makes sense and very practical approach.

...does it matter how much he knows if he's not there to teach?
I don't know why the gym was closed...
all i know is one day i had a gym, the next day, i didn't... and afaik, nobody got a refund on anything.

and they are debating over function of RA, that's all.
Not all coaches will agree on everything, hence, debate.

Well here are the facts
Knowledge:
I think he has a lot of knowledge. However, he tends to make sweeping statements that are quite Poliquin-ish. But then again, he has claimed to be tight with Poliquin...and Cosgrove, Boyle, Mel Siff, Steve Cotter, Paul Chek, and probably a bunch of other famous coaches.
Claims:
Yeah he claims to have a PhD, Masters, have worked at Cancer wards, own a pharmaceutical lab for his various "supplements", trained quite a few Olympic/professional athletes, had an unbeaten record at K-1 fighting, has written dozens of books. However, none of this has ever been verified.
Character:
Not the best integrity around. Initially he was very friendly, bearing free gifts for all of us on our very first meeting. I believe many of us have gotten freebies from him before. Personally I've gotten mini bands, ab-wheel, foam rollers for free, and quite a few things that I bought from him were at a substantial discount. I've also gotten rehab services from him at a substantial discount, and so was my gym membership. I was lucky enough to pay by the month so I didn't get burned.
HOWEVER, he is highly unreliable and just has a general bochup attitude, and treats other people like he's superior and he shouldn't give a shit. Several times my appointments with him were canceled last minute, 1 time I showed up at his door for my appointment and the gym was closed, and he didn't answer his phone. He always has some "reason" why he's not there and uncontactable. I believe a batch of OPTS-CPT candidates also experienced the same thing.
He also closed his gym down with 2 days notice. Some members were not even told due to the timeline. Refunds were never given even though verbally promised. His gym closed down July 31 2008, so it's been almost a year now with no refunds. Since he has closed down his own forum(also without any notice at all) he is not contactable as he every email to him always seems to go to spam.
Refunds were also not given to people who pre-paid for the various courses that he was supposed to fly back here and conduct...he didn't, due to "Visa problems". Again, didn't bother to explain any further.
We also conducted a mass order of kettlebells and clubbells from him. This took months to arrive, and when it did, the clubbells were all missing. He blamed the Chinese suppliers for messing the order up and said he'd fix it. I was actually in contact with the suppliers and they said his account ran out of money so they didn't ship the clubbells. So, not sure who to believe.
All in all, he can be the nicest guy to you one day in person, and then totally bochup you the next day. I've learnt and received a lot from him so I'm not gonna tear him down like some others have done, however, his integrity really leaves a lot to be desired. So, caveat emptor.

no comments on whether he's lying. it has never been verified so it could be true or false. either i don't really care as i never went for his course, just his 1-2 hour workshops, which i've honestly picked up quite a lot of things from.
however, he's pretty much dead against any sort of steady state cardio, so he will be giving you hell if you told him you were training triathletes anyway
