I have searched a lot of definitions for project scope and project specifications but still dont get it.Could someone provide a not too in-depth but not that vague either description and some examples.Does scope have some sort of problem statement then solution then objectives? Thanks.

Simple terms, scope is closely aligned with the outcome or result you want to achieve. You want a 10% increase in "X". Do you want it for a department, the company, an individual? How broad or narrow is your focus?

Project specifications are how you set about achieving the outcome. What resources are required? How will they be deloyed? Milestones? Deadlines?

Well think of this in terms of Project management. You have a scope of work, a timeline to perform this scope of work, and a budget to conform to. These are the fundamentals; without all three, there's no project to manage (e.g. given a scope and some money, but unlimited time, or given some money and time, but no scope, and of course given scope and time, but no money!).

Within your scope of work, you have, amongst other things, specifications.

Scope: I want to build an aircraft within 1 year, with a budget of $100m. This aircraft must be able to fly up to 36000 ft, at mach 0.8, and carry 200 passengers, with a refueling range of 1000miles.

Specs: after initial design, requirements analysis etc, we propose to the client that the aircraft shall be 200 ft long, with a wingspan of 100ft, two engines of type X. Body made of titanium, wings of composite, etc.

Hope you can see, scope does not necessarily have specs, although of course the client and industry may mandate some.

BTW depending on what you are actually studying, terms may vary. What we practise in the real world is biased by specific PM models used from a company to company perspective. What you are studying may be completely different.

In simpler terms, scope of work = outline and type of works to be carried out... project specs is a more indepth informations on the project...juz a genral outline for both.....
