My ethernet died on me..
looks like its a good excuse to upgrade!
Anyway i'm switching to red camp, whats the best bang for buck AM2+ processor?
9100E?
i'm going to pair it up with gigabyte 790 chipset.
Maybe upgrade my 8800GT to 4870.

Red camp go ask xian, he's DAAMIT's loyal fanboy. Sure ask you get Phenom.
But ya if you want ultra cheap, AMD is the way to go I guess. Just can't compare to any intel higher end dual/quad core.
But your 8800GT no need upgrade lah, still quite capable. A bit slower than my 9800GTX nia...
If you want, I can sell you my 9800GTX cheap cheap next month, I upgrading to 4850x2

no need to be ultra cheap la, wondering which quad is bang for buck..
main thing now is low power but enough juice to run games with reasonable bling and no lag.

I think i hoot these -
- MSI 790 plat
- Phenom 9550
- Palit 4870 512
- Andyson looks good for a PSU but then i prefer modular ones.
But then phenom II coming out next month ZZzz Why~

any other modular psus with 80plus?
cause i want to fit into a SFF shoe box, i don't really like clutter..
Posted: Mon Dec 22, 2008 4:35 pm

sff can fit 4870 ?? better check first 4870 quite long

If it's not ultra cheap, I suggest you go intel instead. AFAIK AMD can only make it in the ultra cheap segment for now. Phenom II coming out soon though, supposed to give the C2Q's a run for their money. Dunno about price.
But anyway Kev is right, just get a NIC and continue using your mobo.

i'm selling off my whole system liao, generating too much heat.
Highest bid for now is 370 for everything less the rams/hdd and sound card.
Just enough to pay for my gcard.
I want mirco atx board with smaller case la, 790 chipset is exactly what i'm looking for.
Low power consumption - less heat - enough juice to play game and can fit into a small casing so i can put it on my desk.
I'm not into the hardcore performance and want maximum bling, enough connections out for audio/display.
futureproofing it for as HTPC/BT/file server rig.

4870 can get for 370 meh? And can fit in SFF meh? Come lah buy my 9800GTX lah I sell you less than that

yes 4870 can get for 370 369 i think for the 512mb version not 1gb version

This thread should belong to hwz coz it's IT.

but we're comp geeks, who only post E-stats!!
379 now promo for 1 Gig
339 for 512
http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showt ... ?t=2206685
i'm getting CM elite 340 - small slick casing enough room for big cards.
PSU i think i'll just take Cosair HX520.
Total dmg less than 700.
Think just go with 9550, screw the phenom II, don't really need it.

by galapogos
Don't think you need HX520...just get andyson/acbel/some other decent OEM 400+W can liao.

See lah... short your port after raping it again...

I have a preference for AMD as a low power, bang-for-buck server, however sometimes installing bsd/linux on an nforce platform can be a pain, although support (read kernel drivers) in the last 12 months have dramatically improved.
And to hijack this thread, if anybody has any sources for 1U/2U opteron high efficiency servers with hotswap SATA bays, let me know...
Oh, and a good web/PHP programmer who can interface to LDAP with kerberos ticket authentication for single sign on... sigh...

FSP FTW, otherwise my enermax's and tagans have lived for many years... stay away from cheapies, they don't last, and can kill your MB (and other bits).

by galapogos
AMD was lower power and higher performance about 3 years ago...it all changed when Conroe appeared. Intel has had the lead in both perfomance and power consumption ever since.
And FSP was also good till about 2 years ago, until they changed the consumer platform to a very outdated group regulated design with poor ripple performance. I was conned into buying my cheap FSP Epsilon 600W just by looking at the FSP brand price w/o reading any reviews. Turns out that was the start of FSP's slide into mediocrity...what luck! Enermax is still good though, but overpriced IMHO. Tagans are hit and miss. But yeah, stay away from the cheapies. You want server grade, look at Etasis/PCPC/Zippy/Andyson/Seventeam

That may be true, but on server platforms, FB DIMMS suck power big time, and I don't think DDR3 helps either on the desktop.
Gosh that's a shame about FSP

Posted: Mon Dec 22, 2008 9:32 pm
by galapogos
Yeah, HyperTransport is much more scalable on MP servers than intel's FSB. But for 1-4 CPU systems intel still has the edge I think, despite the FB-DIMM. And DDR3 is just inevitable in the near future...I'm still running DDR2 though.
Anyway what I said about FSP only applies to their consumer products, not sure about their server products.

i want modular, i hate having bundles of unwanted cables.
I usually take 2 hours to do cable management after setup.
HX520 is a sweet deal, modular + 80plus and emits very low heat.
My TT sucks, so hot...makes my whole room hot.
If andyson has modular, i'll take it but they don't =/

my TT very cool lor very quiet also 80plus also
