Bodybuilding and social life

Post by Ryan.carpediem »

NFFT: How much sacrifice did you make to get the National Junior title? Did your bodybuilding lifestyle affect your social life?

Danie Darma: Ive never won the National Junior title before. Honestly, I never had much of a social life. I was a reject, and got bullied all the time. I didn't have much friends. It was actually bodybuilding that developed my confidance and personality. That eventually led to me having a healthier social circle. Bodybuilding really gave me a new leash of life.

Nothing personal against him. Just made me wonder.

Do you guys think this is the norm or the exception?

Personally, I think that weight training has made me slightly more confident and secure. However, a person's confidence cannot come primarily from this. In fact, someone who's already secure and confident in who they are will probably be able to succeed in weight training[ bodybuilding/strongman or whatever].

Just look at Sufian.

feel free to share your opinions. :)

Layne Norton said he looked like a pathetic geek when he was young. He took up training and the rest was history.

If you're not a competing "bodybuilder", why compare yourself to one? Do you have plans to step on stage one day?

There are many ways to gain confidence, they can come from success or failure in your academic, social (or perhaps I should say societal), athletic (or otherwise personal interest pursuits), spiritual, or work related facets of your life.

Failure is not always a negative; likewise neither is Success a positive.

Ask yourself this; why do I not feel confident. It is most likely a conglomerate of various factors; being physically and academically above the mean or median, does not correlated with any work related, spiritual nor societal success (and of course all other permutations).

The only guarantee in life is that things change, aka Entropy always increases. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, seek to excel in at least one significant skill, continue to improve what you are weak at, be kind to animals and strangers, help the unfortunate when you are able to. Always try your best.

...

What the heck did I have for dinner? I think I've been working too hard...

Bodybuilding and weight-training, like everything else, is a tool for you to shape the reality that you want. There is nothing right or wrong in using it to achieve your goals.

Just shut up and train.
Just a matter of priorities.
Working "hard," or the perception of working hard, doesn't really mean anything. Sweating, vomiting, and breathing hard could be a good workout or a tropical disease kicking in.-Dan John

This guy gets from extreme to extreme.

From little boy who got bullied to someone who get respect.

I don't think you got bullied by your physical aspect but your EQ, how you handle situation and people.

True

Having a somewhat physically imposing stature can help deter physical abuse but it doesnt mean that people cannot manipulate your emotions especially if you got no self-perspective or have a weak will.

I also remembered about Danie's rant on people who had befriended him only after he had some success but they were belittling him before that instead.

...the way i see it, it's about what you see in the mirror.
the dude didn't like the small kid who got bullied, he trained, got big, and liked what he has become (or was becoming).

...one could become the biggest guy in the world, but what he is seeing in the mirror is the still small dick, then it's not gonna do much for his self-confidence.

Feeling secure, not that much. But i guess one will at least be more ambitious in what they're doing. Eg setting small goals during weight training like PRs, fat loss etc. Small goals leads to big goals. Big goals leads to better confidence.

Better confidence leads to hunger for power. Power hunger for more goals. That hunger results in disagreements among you and your fellowman, forgoing ties that binded you together. Everyone wants to survive and feed themselves. But are they able to do so in the foreign country in the area where the Yakuza rules? How does one illegal immigrant survive in the corner of Japan against the Yakuza?

Ok continuing from the 1st paragraph, if we wants the big goals and confidence, in the first place we have to make sure we attain the small goals in the first place. No point setting unattainable goals for yourself if u know u can't get it. Worse if the goal is not attained, one may feel more rejected and demoralised. So dont do things to pull yourselve back, reach your goals and push you forward, get to know yourselve more. And of course your family and friends, there's no such things as bodybuilding (even any sports unless your friend is your left or right hand) = no social life. I believe Sufian has proved that big time, and may even gained fans from there.

For that guy in the mention, i believe it's quite the norm for him to have a heathier social circle. Confidence is good, just remember not to be overconfident.
Squats can only strengthen, tear or break something. Strengthening, tearing and breaking is totally awesome. Thus squats are awesome.
