Core stability training and hamstring flexibility

Post by galapogos »

Stability training of the lumbo-pelvo-hip complex influence stiffness of the hamstrings: a preliminary study

An analysis of data obtained in an experiment investigating the influence of stability training of the lumbo-pelvo-hip complex (LPHC) on stiffness of the hamstrings is presented. Randomized controlled trial. The study included 30 subjects (aged 18-42 years) with increased stiffness of the hamstrings at baseline. Over a period of 4 weeks, stability training aiming to activate the deep stabilizing muscle subsystem and to integrate its action with the superficial subsystem was introduced in the experimental group. The control group remained unaffected. Three series of measurements were applied (baseline, after 2 weeks, and after 4 weeks). A digital inclinometer was used to measure outcomes of passive knee extension in the supine test. In the experimental group, a tendency to decrease stiffness of the hamstrings was observed. It was the opposite in the control group. Significant intra-group differences in the experimental group between series 1 and 3 measurements for both the right and left lower extremities were revealed. Stability training of the LPHC showed a tendency to be effective in reducing stiffness of the hamstrings.

It's too bad they didn't conduct any "before" test for the core stuff, so it's hard to tell if it was the improved core stability that affected the hamstring flexibility, or something else.

WEll thats true my friend .In my experience with working with clients, a weak core = tight erectors = almost 0 degree ASIS /PSIS shift = poor glute firing pattern=to hamstring tightness and various muscles in the lower extremeties compensating trying to stabilize for the almost non existing glutes etc and improper hip mechanics... but then again hamstring tightness is sometimes caused by poor postural patterns namely flat back which then most of the time has the same list of problems. The main thing I do with clients with tight hamstrings usually is to address what came first..

ok bro I should shut up now!! Just sharing what I thought. Im not an expert and I hate to be labelled that bro seriously. We are all the same, just learning new stuff everyday. The only reason I posted that was because I knew only the guys in this forum would understand what I mean which allows more room for discussion . Right?

How can it be a waste of money? While the study design may not be perfect, it sets out to test a hypothesis that has never been proven in a research setting. It may reaffirm what we think we know, or it may show us something that we've missed. That's the goal of most good studies.
