When me, lee, the sg titans who went down and chaar's friends all went down to the arm wrestling competition, we were out to have fun and try out some another strength sport. We thought it would be interesting, and were all excited about it. Injury was the last thing on our minds.

But after the first day, I decided that i would not continue the following day. I have made it to the finals on sunday. But on saturday, my joints took a severe beating. My left elbow "popped" or "cracked" (you know, that dull sound in your joints, follwed by pain) when i wrestled chaar. The same happened to the right when i wrestled either Dzul or Nek ( can't remember which one of them). Having wrestled most of the opponents with my right arm, my shoulder joint, which wasn't good in the first place, felt like giving way. In the end, I couldn't even take down one of the referees, whom was of a smaller built, because i couldn't summon strength from my right shoulder joint. I decided to play it safe and tell the officials i would not be coming down.

I felt both bummed and fortunate when i received the call from lee on sunday night that he was in the hospital with a broken arm. Bummed that a friend got injured. Fortunate that i listened to my body and chose not to go on. The person getting injured could have been me.

Not trying to demonize arm wrestling. To be fair to the sport, it is good clean fun. IF you know how to do it. Most of us there were just amateurs using brute strength against one another. But because of this, we do not know how to execute the technique properly, and therefore expose ourselves to greater risk of injury. There are techniques, if you look at youtube videos and the winner of the competition. But i doubt that many here know or can teach you how to execute it properly. And even knowing how to do it properly does not absolve you from injury.

Wanna try arm wrestling? Sure, go ahead. But just remember that someone you know has just broken his arm in it. That's enough for anyone to tread with caution. My two cents worth.

People also tore bicep while flipping tires before.

Moral of the story - if you wanna compete safely, train for it. Don't just show up and expect your other training to have a crossover. It might, but probably not as much as you expected.

Some techniques i use (I do not claim to be an expert or leading authority on arm wrestling)

1)Sit very close to the table

2)Flex lats and draw them to the triceps

Find that it reduces stress on shoulder and gives me an edge.

Yeap.

And even that does not really guarantee safety.

Anything can happen, it is just about minimizing it.
