Interesting training circuit with snorkel in mouth

Its not really 'hypoxic' training.
Hypoix training is done at altitude where the oxygen fraction of the air you breath is less.
Normal air that you breath in at ground level is 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. You metabolize about 4% (IIR), and breath that out at CO2.
If you train at altitude, the oxygen fraction reduces. If it drops below 16% then you cant 'breathe', and below 10% you just pass out and fade away. Train hard at altitude for about a month and you will kick ass when you compete at sea level. I spent 4 months at 2km skiing biathlons at its awesome when you come down.
Assuming he is at sea level, then what hes doing is restricting the volume of air he can inhale on each breath. Its no different than Fireman Fran or SWAT Fran.

I thought that the oxygen percentage for all altitude in Earth's atmosphere are roughly the same? Just that the oxygen satuation per cubic metre is lesser as altitude increases. In other words, the air is less dense.jerry.mobbs wrote:Its not really 'hypoxic' training.

Its not hypoxia, its hypercapnia!
By putting the snorkel in his mouth he is making himself rebreathe some of his exhaled breath on each subsequent breath, unless he fully clears the snorkel on each breath.
What happens is that as he takes in his first breath, he will then exhale some co2. If he does not fully exhale, then some of the co2 will be left in the snorkel and will be re inhaled on the next breath.
If you get to much co2 on inhalation, you end up with a condition called hypercapnia which can also occur when a closed circuit rebreather is malfunctioning. This has happened to me when i was 50m underwater and all I can remember is a feeling of impending doom, and an inability to complete simple drills. Probably a similar feeling to having to get in the ring with this guy!
The Navy used to train for this by removing the co2 scrubber from the equipment, and they then make you swim hard against the wall of the pool. You start by feeling a mild headache which is designed to help you recognize the symptoms. This can be followed by nausea and vomiting.
In this case its hard to see if hes fully exhaling on each breath. If he is not, he does run the risk of cellular damage and he is one tough B$#@@#d. My 'guess' is that he's getting good exhalation on each breath and thats how he's keeping the work rate up.
If your tempted to try this yourself on some timed GS sets for purely entertainments sake, makes sure you have soemone with you. You may complete the set ok, but end up with a massive headache when you stop.
